Case study

BuzzMC

Two multi-instance servers: a Prison with its own enchantments and private mines, and an SMP on a custom core that split worlds across machines before Folia existed.

Two servers, both multi-instance

We coded two servers for BuzzMC: a Prison and an SMP. Both ran across multiple instances.

Prison: the whole loop, custom

Not a couple of extra enchants on top of vanilla. We built a full custom enchantment system and an upgradable private mine system: the kit, the progression, the whole loop.

SMP: one world, many machines

The SMP ran on a custom server core that split its worlds across multiple machines, and still kept chat, player data and the rest in sync, so it played like one server.

This was before Folia existed. There were no threaded worlds to build on, so we had to invent the split ourselves.

What happened next

The SMP reached 100 players online, then it was shut down. It wasn't a tech problem: the core worked.

Timeline

  1. Prison

    A Prison built from scratch

Multi-instance, with a custom enchantment system and upgradable private mines.

  2. SMP

    One world, many machines

A custom core split the worlds across multiple machines and kept chat and player data in sync, before Folia existed.

  3. Peak

    100 players online

The SMP reached 100 players online.

  4. End

    Shut down

The server was shut down for reasons that had nothing to do with the tech.
